KNOWING WHEN IT’S TIME FOR RESIDENTIAL CARE

It's time to consider residential care for your parents when their needs, especially regarding health and safety, become too great to manage at home or when the caregiver's ability to provide adequate care is strained, often due to burnout. This decision should be made after careful consideration of the parents' individual circumstances and needs.

Key Signs to Consider

Medical Needs:

Significant health conditions requiring mandatory medications or illness may require constant monitoring and care that's beyond the scope of what can be provided at home.

Mobility and Safety:

Difficulty with daily tasks like bathing, dressing, or walking, or frequent falls, can pose safety risks.

Cognitive Decline:

Changes in memory, confusion, or disorientation may require 24/7 supervision.

Hygiene and Home Care:

The lack of personal hygiene or home maintenance can be a sign that additional assistance is needed.

Medication Management:

Trouble remembering to take medications or managing multiple medications can indicate a need for professional help.

Caregiver Burnout:

When the caregiver experiences significant stress, fatigue, or exhaustion, it's a sign that they may need support.

Social Isolation:

Loneliness and a lack of social interaction can negatively impact a person's well-being and require a change in their environment.

Making the Decision

  1. Assess the Parent's Needs:

Evaluate the specific challenges your parents are facing, including their physical, cognitive, and emotional needs.

  2. Consider the Caregiver's Capacity:

Be honest about the limitations of your ability to provide care, both physically and emotionally.

  3. Explore Options:

Research different types of residential care, such as a residential home setting, assisted living, skilled nursing facilities, and memory care.

  4. Involve the Parent:

If possible, include your parents in the decision-making process and discuss their preferences and concerns.

  5. Seek Professional Advice:

Consult with doctors, social workers, or elder care professionals for guidance and support. Talk with residential care owners to evaluate what they can offer, evaluate pros, cons, and costs before making a decision.

Employee of the Month: Cristina Browning

Cristina Browning is a valued member of the Hand in Home Care team, known for her warmth, dedication, and ability to connect deeply with those in her care. Originally from Missouri, she relocated to Texas nearly two years ago with her four teenage children—two daughters and two sons. Her journey reflects resilience, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to helping others.

Inspired by her children, Cristina returned to school to earn her GED and immediately enrolled in the police academy. Before joining Hand In Home Care, Cristina built a diverse career in healthcare and law enforcement. She spent over a decade working as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Certified Medication Aide (CMA), and in a mental health crisis facility. Later, she served more than five years in law enforcement—a bold career shift that showcased her courage and adaptability.

Currently, Cristina is pursuing a degree in Child Psychology, with plans to graduate by 2027. Her long-term goal is to work with troubled and at-risk youth, combining her lived experiences with academic training to make a meaningful impact. Cristina’s approach to caregiving is rooted in empathy and respect. She believes older adults deserve not only support but companionship, laughter, and dignity. She finds joy in listening to their stories, learning from their wisdom, and creating moments of connection that enrich their lives.

Outside of work, Cristina is an avid reader—especially of urban fiction and mystery novels—and enjoys traveling and deepening her faith alongside her family. She’s approachable, quick to laugh, and always ready to lend a hand. We are proud to recognize Cristina Browning as Employee of the Month at Hand In Home Care.
